Dermal fillers are a common and popular method of providing new volume in areas that have lost soft tissue through aging, approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). As we get older, our hormones change and the production of crucial proteins and compounds like collagen slows down. This, in turn, leads to a reduction in plumpness as well as wrinkles, saggy skin, age lines, and more. Dermal fillers act as injectable “implants,” using chemical compounds that boost collagen production and a gel structure that gives you back the volume you’ve lost.
When you get a filler treatment at Glow Aesthetic Center, you’re in good hands. Led by Dr. Homan Siman, our aesthetic medical staff has years of experience providing clients with high-quality dermal fillers. Still, it’s important to engage in good practices after your filler treatment to prolong the life of your fillers and extend your results as long as possible. Below, we’ll get into specific activities to avoid after your filler treatment.
If you’re ready to reduce those wrinkles and age lines and get the look of your youth back, dermal fillers might be the answer you’re looking for. Call Glow Aesthetic Center at (818) 905-8815 to schedule your appointment today. You can also reach us through our contact page.
What to Avoid Immediately After Your Dermal Filler Treatment
There are several recommendations we make to clients about aftercare in the wake of any cosmetic treatment. Dermal fillers are minimally invasive, but they do involve an injection that can cause some slight irritation, swelling, redness, and itching. It’s important that you take the proper precautions to avoid potential infection or other issues.
No Touching
You might experience some discomfort or itching in the target area after your treatment. Don’t touch! Disturbing the area can create sores, cause scar tissue to form, or simply aggravate and inflame the area.
No Fatty Acids
Fatty acids and pain relievers like Motrin or Aspirin can cause additional bleeding and bruising. If possible, avoid consuming these items. This includes:
- Gingko
- Fish oil
- Vitamins A and E
- Garlic
No Swell-Enhancers
You should also avoid eating or drinking items that tend to cause swelling or inflammation. That includes spicy foods, caffeine, cigarettes, and foods high in sugar content. Don’t worry, you don’t have to give up these items forever. Just try not to ingest or imbibe in the 48 hours following your dermal filler treatment.
No Sun
You don’t have to barricade yourself in darkness for the rest of your life. However, try to avoid direct sunlight for the next three days or so (especially during the hottest parts of the day). Ultraviolet radiation from the sun can damage your skin in the best of times, and it’s especially harmful to skin that is healing.
No Make-Up or Further Cosmetic Treatments
If your dermal fillers were used on your face, it’s important to avoid causing additional irritation by applying make-up. Try to avoid make-up at all, if possible, for a full day following your filler treatment. If you absolutely must apply make-up for a situation like work or a significant occasion, try to use mineral-based options.
Also, you should not schedule additional cosmetic treatments for at least two weeks following your fillers. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Microneedling
- Facials
- Peel sessions
- Masks
- Laser treatments
If you have a medical or cosmetic treatment scheduled within two weeks of your fillers, make sure to discuss the matter with the team at Glow Aesthetic Center. We will be able to assess whether we need to reschedule your treatment in order to safely and effectively provide you with the dermal fillers you need.

What to Do to Extend the Life of Your Fillers
After you are healed from the initial dermal filler treatment (which shouldn’t take too long!), there are some steps you can take to make sure your fillers last as long as possible.
- Lower your stress. Cortisol and other stress hormones can reduce the production of necessary molecules in your body, like collagen or hyaluronic acid. The result is that you’ll continue to lose volume.
- Moisturize. Drink lots of water and use skin moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated. This will help give it that youthful glow while making the fillers “work” less, so they can last longer.
- Protect your skin. Even after the injection sites of your fillers are healed, it’s important to avoid too much sunlight. When you do venture out into the open air, make sure to use at least 30SPF sunscreen to reduce the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation.
