Kybella has become a go-to treatment for those looking to reduce stubborn under-chin fat without surgery. But as effective as it is, one of the most common questions we get at Glow Aesthetic Center in Encino is: “How long will the swelling last after my Kybella treatment?”
If you’re planning your first session or considering this treatment, it’s important to know what to expect in the days and weeks afterward—especially when it comes to swelling. Let’s walk through why swelling happens, how long it tends to last, and what your recovery and results timeline will look like.
Kybella uses a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring bile acid in your body that helps break down dietary fat. When injected under the chin, it disrupts the membranes of fat cells, causing them to break apart. Your body then processes and eliminates the destroyed fat cells over the following weeks.
But that breakdown process triggers an inflammatory response in the body. This is completely normal—it’s actually a sign that the treatment is working. Swelling is your body’s way of dealing with the destroyed fat and beginning the healing process.
In most cases, the swelling isn’t just fluid—it’s also due to the volume of the injected Kybella itself and the immune system’s response to the fat destruction happening beneath the skin.
After your Kybella injections, you can expect swelling to begin within the first few hours. Many patients describe the area as feeling warm, tender, or mildly puffy. This is all a normal part of the healing process.
Here’s a general timeline of what most patients experience:
Swelling is at its peak within the first 24 to 72 hours after treatment. This is when the treated area may look fuller than it did before the injections, which can surprise patients who were hoping for immediate slimming. There may also be some mild redness, tightness, and tenderness.
It’s not unusual for the area to feel a little numb or firm during this time. Some patients also report a slight tingling or itching sensation.
By the end of the first week, most of the initial inflammation will begin to go down. You may still have some puffiness, but the treated area will start looking more like it did before the procedure. Any bruising should also begin to fade at this stage.
You might notice that your chin still feels firm or lumpy underneath the skin. This is normal and part of the fat breakdown process.
At this point, the swelling continues to decrease, and your body begins flushing out the destroyed fat cells. You may not see dramatic visible results just yet, but this is when the internal healing is most active. Most patients begin seeing noticeable contour improvements after the third or fourth week.
By the sixth week, any residual swelling or firmness should be gone. Your chin and jawline will begin to reveal the full results of your treatment. For many patients, this is when they start to notice the slimming effects most clearly.
If you’re planning multiple sessions, your next Kybella treatment will usually be scheduled around this point.
While individual experiences vary, most patients can expect noticeable swelling to last for 3 to 5 days, with minor residual swelling possibly sticking around for up to two weeks. In some cases—especially with larger treatment areas or higher doses—swelling can linger a little longer. But by week six, almost all patients have returned to their baseline or better.
If you have an event coming up, we generally recommend scheduling your Kybella treatment at least 4–6 weeks in advance to allow time for swelling to subside and results to start showing.
Yes—while some swelling is expected (and even helpful), there are ways to manage it so that your recovery is smoother and more comfortable:
Use a cold compress: Apply cold packs to the area for 10–15 minutes at a time, especially during the first 24 hours.
Avoid strenuous exercise: For at least 48 hours after treatment, skip workouts or anything that raises your heart rate significantly.
Sleep elevated: Use an extra pillow to prop up your head at night. This can help minimize fluid buildup in the treated area.
Avoid alcohol and salty foods: Both can increase fluid retention, which may make swelling worse.
Take arnica or bromelain: These natural supplements may help with bruising and swelling, though you should always check with your provider first.
If you have swelling that feels severe, lasts more than a couple of weeks, or is accompanied by pain or redness that gets worse over time, contact your provider. Most swelling is normal, but it’s always best to check if something feels off.
Once your swelling has fully subsided—typically around the 4 to 6 week mark—you’ll begin to notice a more defined chin and jawline. For many patients, this initial treatment is just the beginning. Kybella works gradually, and most people require 2 to 4 sessions to reach their final aesthetic goal.
What’s exciting about Kybella is that the results are long-lasting. Because the fat cells under your chin are permanently destroyed, they won’t return—unless you experience significant weight gain in the future.
With each session, swelling may become less noticeable, especially as the overall volume of fat in the area decreases.
It’s normal for the area under your chin to feel a little uneven or lumpy as the fat cells break down. This is called “induration” and it usually resolves on its own. The body is working to process the treated fat and stimulate collagen production at the same time, which can create a temporarily firm or irregular texture.
Massage is not recommended after Kybella, as it may interfere with how the product is distributed and how your body processes the fat. If you’re concerned about texture or firmness after your treatment, reach out to your provider for a follow-up check-in.
