Tear Trough Filler 101

A deep hollow under the eyes can cast a shadow. That shadow can make you look tired after a full night’s sleep. Tear trough filler is used to restore some of the volume between the lower eyelid and upper cheek. The aim is usually to soften the hollow and create a smoother transition through the under-eye area.

The treatment works best when volume loss is a large part of the concern. Dark circles have several causes. Pigment, visible blood vessels, thin skin, or under-eye bags can all play a part. Filler will not suit every tired-looking eye. A careful assessment helps separate those causes before treatment begins.

At Glow Aesthetic Center, we use hyaluronic acid under-eye fillers including Juvederm Volbella, Restylane-L, and Restylane Eyelight. This guide explains what tear trough filler does and what results can look like. It also covers how long it lasts, safety, and recovery.

What Is Tear Trough Filler?

Tear trough filler is dermal filler placed beneath the eyes. It softens a hollow between the lower eyelid and cheek by adding support where volume has been lost.

  • It can reduce the look of an under-eye hollow.
  • It may soften shadowing linked with lost volume.
  • It can create a smoother transition into the cheek.
  • Hyaluronic acid filler can be adjusted or dissolved if needed.

The treatment is most useful when the concern comes from a true hollow rather than pigment or prominent under-eye bags.

What Is the Tear Trough?

The tear trough is a groove beneath the eye. It starts near the inner corner and runs toward the cheek. Some people have a clear groove when they are young because of their facial shape. For others, it gets deeper with age. The tissues around the eye change over time.

Loss of support in the upper cheek can make the hollow look deeper too. The groove then catches light in a different way. This can create a darker shadow below the eye. That shadow can make the face seem tired even when the skin itself has little pigment.

What Can Tear Trough Filler Change?

Filler in the tear trough area replaces some lost support. A small amount can soften a deep dip. It can also reduce the shadow made by that hollow. The eye area can then look smoother and more rested. The eye itself does not need to change shape.

Good treatment keeps normal contours in place. Making the whole under-eye area flat can create puffiness. It can also make the area look overfilled. The goal is a softer transition that fits the rest of the face.

It Can Soften Hollowing

Under-eye hollowing can create a clear dip between the lower eyelid and cheek. Filler adds support beneath that hollow. This can make the transition look smoother.

The change can be especially useful when the hollow becomes more obvious in side lighting or photographs.

It Can Reduce Some Shadowing

A deep groove creates a physical shadow. Filling part of that groove can make the shadow less visible. This may soften dark circles caused by lost volume.

Filler does not remove brown pigment or visible blood vessels under thin skin. If color is the main concern, another treatment may suit you better.

It Can Support Overall Facial Balance

The under-eye area is linked with the rest of the midface. Cheek volume, eyelid shape, and bone structure can all affect the depth of the trough.

In some cases, supporting the cheek can improve the under-eye area as part of the same plan. We look at the surrounding face rather than treating one small hollow in isolation.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Tear Trough Filler?

A good candidate often has a clear under-eye hollow and little puffiness. Skin quality and cheek support can affect the result too. During a consultation, we look at the area at rest and in different light. One photo does not show the full picture.

People with strong under-eye bags, fluid buildup, or very loose skin may need another approach. Filler adds volume, so adding it to an area that already looks puffy can make fullness more obvious.

We review your health history before making a plan. Tell us about allergies, medicines, and any filler you have had before.

Which Fillers Does Glow Use Under the Eyes?

At Glow Aesthetic Center, our under-eye filler choices include Juvederm Volbella, Restylane-L, and Restylane Eyelight. All three use hyaluronic acid. Their texture and other features can suit different treatment plans.

Juvederm Volbella has a smooth gel texture and can add subtle volume. Restylane-L combines hyaluronic acid with lidocaine, a numbing medicine. Restylane Eyelight is made for under-eye hollows and uses NASHA technology.

Product choice depends on your facial shape and the depth of the hollow. We also consider the type of result we are planning. We do not choose a filler based on brand name alone.

What Happens During Treatment?

Your visit starts with an assessment of the under-eye area and nearby cheek. We look at the depth of the hollow, skin thickness, and puffiness. We also check how the area changes with expression. The treatment plan is then based on the amount and location of volume loss.

A numbing cream or local anesthetic may be used before the injections. The filler is placed at selected points beneath the eye. The aim is a smooth change without obvious bulk.

Glow’s under-eye filler appointments usually take around 15 to 30 minutes.

Tear Trough Filler Before and After

You can often see a change soon after treatment. Early swelling can make the area look fuller than the settled result. Mild redness, bruising, or tenderness can appear near the injection points. These effects often ease over the next few days.

Once swelling settles, the under-eye area is easier to judge. Good comparison photos use similar light, angle, and facial expression. Harsh overhead light can deepen shadows. Mismatched photos may make a result look larger or smaller than it is.

The biggest visible improvement is often in the hollow and the shadow around it. Pigment or natural skin color may still be present after filler.

How Long Does Tear Trough Filler Last?

Glow notes that under-eye filler results often last about six to twelve months. Your own timeline can vary. Product choice, metabolism, the amount used, and facial shape can all affect it.

The result fades as the body breaks down the hyaluronic acid. Some people return for maintenance once the hollow becomes more visible again.

We assess the area before adding more. Old filler can still be present even when the result looks less obvious.

What Is Recovery Like?

Most people return to normal daily activities soon after treatment. Mild swelling, redness, tenderness, or bruising can happen. These effects often improve within a few days. A cold compress may be recommended for comfort.

Avoid rubbing or pressing the under-eye area while it settles. Glow also advises taking a break from hard exercise during early recovery. Keep the area protected from direct sun too.

Follow the instructions we give you after treatment. Aftercare can vary with the product and plan.

Is Tear Trough Filler Safe?

Tear trough filler is generally well tolerated in suitable candidates. Careful planning and treatment by an experienced medical professional are important. Common effects include swelling, redness, bruising, and tenderness. They are usually temporary.

The under-eye area has delicate tissue and important blood vessels. Accurate placement is especially important here. Rare problems can occur with any facial filler.

A detailed consultation helps us plan treatment around your anatomy. Careful technique and clear aftercare are part of the process too. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if an adjustment is needed.

Contact us promptly after filler if you have unusual pain or a change in skin color. Any vision change needs urgent medical care.

What Tear Trough Filler Cannot Fix

Not every dark circle comes from a hollow. Brown or gray pigment can remain after the groove is filled. Visible vessels may still show through thin skin. Filler also does not remove loose skin or large under-eye bags.

During your consultation, we focus on the cause of the concern. If the hollow is only one part of the picture, we can explain what filler may improve. We can also explain what may stay the same.

This helps keep expectations realistic before treatment begins.

Book an Under-Eye Filler Consultation

Tear trough filler can soften under-eye hollows and reduce shadows caused by lost volume. It can also smooth the line between the lower eyelid and cheek. A good result starts with treating the right type of concern. The amount of filler should support the area without making it look heavy.

At Glow Aesthetic Center, our under-eye filler consultations start with your facial shape and the change you want. We assess hollowing, skin quality, cheek support, and dark circles before planning treatment.

Book a consultation with us if your under-eye hollows make you look more tired than you feel. We can talk through the filler options and the type of change that may suit you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is tear trough filler?

The price depends on the filler chosen and the amount needed for your treatment plan. We can give you a clear tear trough filler cost after assessing the area. We will also explain which product fits your goals.

Can tear trough filler help dark circles?

It can help when a hollow creates some of the dark shadow. It will not remove pigment or visible blood vessels, so we assess the cause first.

Can under-eye filler be dissolved?

Yes. Hyaluronic acid under-eye fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase when an adjustment or reversal is needed.

Does tear trough filler hurt?

Numbing cream or local anesthetic can be used to make treatment more comfortable. Most people feel brief pressure or small pinches during the injections.

Can tear trough filler make under-eye bags worse?

Added volume can make existing puffiness look stronger in some people. We assess under-eye bags and fluid buildup before recommending filler.

I had a consultation with Tia in the Encino office about fillers and Xeomin. She's awesome -- patient, takes time to explain the procedures in great detail and even drew out a plan. She wasn't pushing services and suggested doing the upper and lower face at different times to spread out the cost over time.

Trying botox for my 11s. They were very thorough for my initial evaluation and described a number of treatments in addition to neurotoxins which could be helpful, but absolutely did not pressure me into getting any of them. The process was quick and easy.
