How Laser Hair Removal Works

At Glow Aesthetic Center, the system we use is a top-of-the-line Quanta 4v laser system. It uses short pulses of high-intensity light, through the medium of an alexandrite crystal, to target individual hair follicles. The light destroys the cells, removing the hair and preventing future growth from that follicle. Our Nd:YAG laser is also from Quanta and simply emits a light beam at a larger wavelength, which makes it better for people with darker skin and hair.

The light beam aimed at the follicles is absorbed by the melanin in the targeted hair follicles without affecting the skin that surrounds the area. As it absorbs the laser, the melanin heats up and the follicle becomes damaged. In this case, that’s a good thing! This is because damaged follicles no longer grow hair.

What to Expect from Your Laser Hair Removal Treatment

Laser hair removal is designed to be as comfortable as possible. That said, there may be some level of discomfort involved, depending on the targeted area and the sensitivity of the surrounding skin. Laser treatment is designed to be pain-free, but we may need to apply a mild numbing cream to the area if it is particularly sensitive.

After your laser hair removal treatment, remember to:

• Use Aquaphor^® or Vaseline^® to moisturize the area several times each day.
• Wear sunscreen on the affected area (at least 45 SPF).
• Shower with cool or tepid water. NO BATHING!
• Pat the affected area dry after your shower, rather than scrubbing it with a towel.

Keeping your skin well-moisturized is a good way to reduce any irritation you may experience. Remember, the procedure damages follicles so even though you may love the results, your skin will still need time to adjust.

Permanent Effects

Though laser hair removal may require several sessions, most if not all of the results are permanent. You may still have some hair in the affected area, but the amount will forever be greatly reduced to an almost unnoticeable point. This makes maintenance fairly simple and can be a great boost to your self-esteem.

Typically, we recommend clients undergo several laser sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart, in order to achieve the best results. If you would like numbing cream applied, please arrive at least half an hour before your scheduled session, as it takes some time for the cream to take effect.
