Do you have acne scars or fine lines and wrinkles that you want to improve the appearance of? Or, maybe you want to tighten and lift your skin and improve your overall skin tone.

Microneedling is an effective, non-invasive treatment for fading scars, tightening skin, and improving the appearance of your fine lines and wrinkles. Keep reading to learn more about microneedling treatment and how it can help your skin.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a procedure where your practitioner uses a small pin-like tool to make small pinpricks in your skin. These pinpricks are extremely tiny, but the damage to your skin is sufficient to encourage your body to heal your skin.

How Does Microneedling Work?

When you injure your skin, your body produces more collagen and elastin to aid the healing process.

Collagen is a protein that helps your body build and maintain your skin. It keeps your skin from sagging and helps it remain elastic. Elastin is another protein that helps your skin keep its shape.

The goal of microneedling is to create small injuries that boost your body’s production of collagen and elastin. We only penetrate your epidermis and the top layer of the dermis to ensure you can’t see the holes with the naked eye.

Microneedling also improves the absorption of your skincare serums and lotions, allowing them to work better.

What Skin Woes Does Microneedling Help?

One of the great things about microneedling is that it improves a variety of common skin complaints. These include:

  • Acne scars
  • Acne
  • Hair loss
  • Hyperpigmentation (dark spots on your skin)
  • Enlarged pores
  • Poor skin elasticity
  • Stretch marks
  • Sun spots
  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Dull complexion

Whether you have one complaint or multiple issues, microneedling will even your skin tone and texture and tighten your skin.

What are the Benefits of Microneedling?

One of the top advantages of microneedling is that it’s less expensive than other similar skincare treatments. It’s also effective for individuals with darker complexions who aren’t good candidates for laser therapies.

While microneedling is a fantastic treatment for facial skin, it’s perfectly fine to use microneedling to improve the skin texture of other areas. For example, you can use microneedling to fade the appearance of stretchmarks or scars.

What Happens During a Microneedling Session?

Your microneedling session will take about 20-30 minutes. First, your practitioner will apply a numbing cream to your face so that you don’t feel the needle pricks.

Then, your practitioner will begin your treatment by using the microneedling device to make small holes in your skin. After they’re done, they may apply a cream or serum specific to your skincare concerns.

Are There Side Effects Associated with Microneedling?

There are a few side effects associated with microneedling. These side effects occur because you’re making small injuries to your skin.

Common side effects after microneedling include:

  • Redness
  • Light bleeding
  • Bruising
  • Peeling

What Should You Expect After Microneedling?

After your appointment, your skin will be a little irritated for a few days, so stay away from harsh cleansers and exfoliants.

Your skin will also be extremely sensitive to UV rays, so make sure you wear sunscreen. It’s fine to wear makeup to camouflage any redness.

Avoid places that potentially have a lot of germs, like swimming pools, the ocean, rivers, or oceans, until your skin is healed.

You’ll likely notice a difference in your skin two to three weeks after your appointment. Many people continue to experience improvements in their skin texture and appearance for a few months after their microneedling therapy.

For the best results, you’ll need multiple treatments. Our practitioners usually recommend a course of six to eight microneedling treatments, with the treatments spaced a month apart. This ensures your skin has time to heal between treatments.

You can maintain your results with periodic maintenance microneedling treatments.

Who Should Avoid Microneedling?

If you have open wounds, wait until they’ve healed before undergoing microneedling therapy. This guideline also applies to active bacterial and fungal infections.

Eczema, psoriasis, and keloid scars usually don’t respond well to microneedling, so avoid using it on areas with these skin conditions.

Should you have a condition that interferes with your body’s ability to heal itself, like diabetes, consider another skincare treatment.
