How PRP Works

Platelet-rich plasma treatments use your own body’s blood to help the healing process. It starts with plasma, which is the liquid part of your blood that acts as a transport for the other parts (like red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets). Plasma actually is the dominant part of your blood and accounts for 55% of its total volume.

When you come in for a PRP treatment, the medical team at Glow Aesthetic Center will draw your blood and separate out the plasma using a sterile centrifuge. This removes the blood cells from the plasma, keeping it rich in platelets. Then, we reinject the plasma into the target area, creating a high concentration of platelets.

These platelets are important because they bind to the damaged area, aid in the clotting process, and are central to your body’s natural healing. The results can take a week or so to be seen, but your injury should heal (or your pain recede) much more quickly than usual. Plus, if you’re getting PRP for cosmetic purposes, the results tend to last up to a full year after your session.

What PRP Is Used For

However, below are a few general guidelines you should abide by to ensure the best possible experience.

Hydration

Remember to drink lots of water before your arrival, and eat a meal as well. Sometimes, it also helps to bring a snack. That’s because getting your blood drawn can lead to lightheadedness or dizziness, especially if you are dehydrated or haven’t eaten recently.

Medical Information

Also, tell us about any significant medical issues you have that might affect the PRP process. In addition to serious conditions like cancer, seemingly minor issues can also interfere with PRP. For example, we’d need to know about things like:

• Anemia or low iron
• Abnormal platelet count
• Decreased platelet function
• Infection

All these conditions affect the state of your blood, so we want to make sure you’re healthy enough to undergo PRP treatment without any additional risk from such medical issues.

Blood Thinners

PRP treatments involve the drawing of your blood and reinjection of your plasma, so it is important not to have chemicals in your body that interfere with your blood’s ability to clot properly. For at least 24 hours before your session, stay away from any pharmaceuticals that contain blood thinners or have blood-thinning properties, such as:

• Ibuprofen
• Aspirin
• Some supplements with Omega-3 fatty acids
