Can PRP Treatment Regrow Hair?

A healthcare professional administering a hair restoration treatment via injection on a male patient's scalp, highlighting the procedure for hair loss recovery.

In recent years, the athletic world has been fixated on a treatment called PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, for rapid injury healing. The process involves taking the patient’s own blood, separating the plasma out, and reinjecting that plasma (which now has an abundance of platelets) into the target area.

While PRP has astounding results for healing injuries, it can also be used to regrow hair for clients who suffer from hair loss or thinning. At Glow Aesthetic Center, we’ve helped many clients restore a healthy head of hair by using their own plasma to boost healing for damaged hair follicles.

If you suffer from hair loss and are looking for a more permanent solution, PRP might be the treatment you need. Get in touch with our team, led by Dr. Homan Siman, by calling the Glow Aesthetic Center office at (818) 905-8815 or by filling out the form on our contact page. We’ll schedule a consultation to discuss your specific needs and formulate a treatment plan unique to you.

How PRP Affects Hair Regrowth

In a study performed in 2019, results showed that PRP treatments had better outcomes than the use of popular hair regrowth product Rogaine. Even better, PRP uses the client’s own blood rather than potentially dangerous or harmful foreign substances. Below, you can see a step-by-step breakdown of how the process works.

1. Getting the Plasma

First, your medical team at Glow Aesthetic Center will draw your blood and place it in a sterile centrifuge. This uses motion to separate the different elements that make up your blood. Specifically, it separates the blood cells from the plasma. Mostly liquid, your plasma is the transportation mechanism that moves your blood through your body. It also contains platelets and proteins that aid in blood clotting and healing processes.

2. Reinjecting the Plasma

We take the plasma that has been separated out from the rest of your blood and inject it into your scalp at the target location. Since this is your own body’s product, it doesn’t have any adverse effects!

3. The Plasma Heals Your Follicles

Plasma, and the platelets it contains, boost healing processes and encourage cell growth. These properties mean that an abundance of platelets and plasma in your scalp will begin to work on damaged follicles, breathing new life into them. Healthy follicles then start to grow hair once more.

How to Prepare for Your PRP Hair Treatment

The main activity during your PRP treatment is the drawing and reinjecting of blood and plasma, respectively. Clients shouldn’t experience any downtime and should be able to drive themselves home after the session. Still, there are some steps we advise you to take in order to see the best results.

  • Avoid taking blood thinners.
  • Inform us of any medical conditions that affect your blood.
  • Eat and drink before your session.

Blood thinners can interfere with the blood drawing process and can keep your blood from clotting properly. Typical medications that contain blood thinning elements include ibuprofen, aspirin, and supplements that use Omega-3 fatty acids.

Additionally, medical conditions that affect your blood may alter your PRP treatment plan. Issues like cancer, abnormal platelet count, reduced platelet function, infections, and others should be disclosed to the medical team at Glow Aesthetic Center so that we can tailor your treatment to your needs.

Also, the most common side effect of getting blood drawn is lightheadedness. To combat this, make sure you have a full stomach before getting your treatment and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

Other Uses for PRP Treatments

PRP isn’t just a solution for hair loss. It is primarily used as a way to help injured people recover more quickly by boosting the body’s natural healing processes. It can be used for injuries like:

  • Muscle damage
  • Skin wounds
  • Tendon or ligament tears
  • Strains and sprains
  • Injuries to joints

It can also help clients who suffer from chronic pain, such as the pain associated with arthritis. By encouraging cell growth and health, some of that pain can be alleviated. Results from PRP treatments can last up to a full year.

Additional Cosmetic Uses

At Glow Aesthetic Center, we treat clients with injuries by providing PRP treatments. We also perform PRP hair loss treatments. But there is another cosmetic use that is also available: microneedling.

Microneedling is a technique that uses tiny needles to painlessly puncture the skin. This triggers the body’s production of collagen, which acts as the “glue” or structural component of many of the body’s organs. By producing more collagen, the skin becomes smoother and more elastic, reducing or eliminating wrinkles and age lines.

When PRP treatments are combined with microneedling, the patient’s own plasma is injected through these tiny needles. This not only boosts collagen production but also emits enzymes that aid in cell regeneration. Known in some circles as the “vampire facial,” since it uses the patient’s blood, this technique has produced truly spectacular results.
