How Often Do You Have to Get Botox Redone?

The first and most well-known of the cosmetic neurotoxin injection treatments, Botox effectively eliminates wrinkles and age lines while preventing new ones from forming. It’s a wonderful way to reinvigorate your self-image, capture the confidence of your youth, and be proud of the way you look once again. However, the effect is not permanent. Typically, you will need to get your Botox treatment redone every three to six months. Some people may be able to extend their treatments a bit longer, while others may find that their treatment wears off after only two months or so.

At Glow Aesthetic Center, we offer a variety of neurotoxin injectable treatments, including Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin. Led by Dr. Homan Siman, our medical staff is ready to help you get back the beauty of your youth. Schedule your first Botox appointment or your follow-up treatment today by calling (818) 905-8815 or by filling out the form on our online contact page. We will set you up with a schedule for regular Botox treatments so that you can stay looking fabulous for longer!

Factors that Affect the Staying Power of Botox

Humanity has been looking for the proverbial Fountain of Youth — the key to staying young forever—for millennia. Unfortunately, we’ve yet to find a permanent solution to the aging process. Yet Botox is still a great, if impermanent, treatment to erase those lines and wrinkles.

Neurotoxins Wearing Off

You need to get your Botoxtreatment redone regularly because the neurotoxin in Botox (botulinum toxin) eventually wears off. Botox works by blocking the neurochemicals in your body that send signals to your muscles to contract. However, your body eventually creates more neurochemicals and the effect goes away.

Body Features and Genetic Factors

Other factors that are outside of your control can play a role in how long your Botox lasts before you need to get it redone. Genetics can come into play, as well as other personal details, according to Healthline. Some of these include:

  • The depth of your wrinkles
  • The elasticity of your skin
  • How old you are

Lifestyle Choices

Some of the factors that affect how often you need to get your neurotoxin treatments redone are within your control. Lifestyle choices that promote skin health and prevent the formation of new wrinkles can help you hold onto Botox‘s effects for longer. For example, try to engage in as many of these habits as possible:

  • Avoid smoking. Smoking is not only linked to life-threatening diseases, like heart disease and cancer, but it also causes wrinkly skin.
  • Moisturize. Moisture is important for your skin and your overall health. While the Mayo Clinic is not sold on the idea that drinking water can improve skin health, it does recommend limiting your time in hot water (which can dry you out) and moisturizing after bathing.
  • Stay out of the sun. The ultraviolet rays emanating from the sun can cause melanoma, as well as create age lines and wrinkles. Stay inside during the hottest parts of the day. When you do venture out, use at least 30 SPF sunscreen and try to wear a hat to provide some shade for your face.
  • Eat a healthy diet. What you put in your body also has an effect on your skin’s health. Try to eat lots of healthy foods like superfoods (avocados and sweet potatoes, for example), leafy greens, fatty fish, and nuts.

You May Need Fewer Treatments as Time Goes On

According to a report issued by the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, you may find that you don’t need to get your Botox redone nearly as often with future treatments. This is due to the way the neurotoxin works. By paralyzing your facial muscles, the neurotoxin smooths out your skin because the muscles underneath are unable to contract. Muscles that do not move for extended periods of time tend to shrink (or atrophy), meaning that it is more difficult to use them in the future.

For Botox users who receive routine treatments, this means the muscles in the face eventually stop contracting as much. You may not need to get the treatment done as often. Importantly, though, you should not get your Botox treatment redone before three months have passed since your last treatment. This can cause you to become resistant to the neurotoxin, negating its effects.
