How Should I Prepare for a PDO Thread Procedure?

Woman receiving a facial treatment with serums in a spa setting, showcasing skincare procedures and beauty therapy.

The main way to prepare for your PDO thread (polydioxanone thread) procedure is to cut out the use of any and all blood-thinning medications or supplements at least a week before your scheduled appointment. This is to reduce the risk of complications like excessive bleeding or bruising. Other than that, the procedure does not require much preparation.

Items and medications to avoid include:

  • Ibuprofen
  • Omega-3
  • Garlic supplements
  • Motrin
  • Aspirin

You may wish to partake of Arnica capsules, eat pineapple, or drink pineapple juice prior to your session as well. Arnica and pineapple both help reduce swelling and bruising.

When you meet with the team at Glow Aesthetic Center, led by Dr. Homan Siman, we’ll create a unique treatment plan according to your exact needs and goals. Click our Book an Appointment tab to schedule your procedure, or call our office at (818) 905-8815 to speak with a friendly representative.

What a PDO Procedure Is Like

New to PDO? No problem! The procedure is simple and straightforward.

At Glow, we use NovaThreads. These are threads made of the same material as the surgical sutures used in cardiac surgeries for over 60 years. They are absorbed by your body over time.

When your board certified practitioner injects the threads, you will see an immediate improvement as the threads are used to tighten the skin on your face. It’s like a facelift, but without all that unnecessary surgical risk!

Your body will eventually absorb the NovaThreads, but this can take a few months. During this time, in a process known as “controlled healing,” your own body helps tighten your facial tissues by healing itself around the PDO threads. It produces collagen around the slowly dissolving threads, creating a tight yet elastic look that captures your youthful glow.

What to Do After Your PDO Thread Treatment

Okay, so PDO thread procedures don’t require a lot of preparation other than avoiding certain blood-thinning medications and supplements. But do they require post-treatment care?

Not much! After your procedure, make sure to:

  • AVOID strenuous exercise for up to 2 weeks
  • AVOID eating large or tough foods that require lots of chewing (apples, hamburgers, etc)
  • AVOID facial massages for two weeks

Slight pain, swelling, and bruising are normal, but you can use both topical arnica gels and oral arnica ingestibles to combat this. The pain and bruising should recede within two weeks. If not, call Glow Aesthetic Center and speak with your aesthetician about the issue.

How Long Do Your PDO Thread Results Last?

It takes about two to six months for the full results of your PDO thread procedure to show, given that your body produces more collagen during this time. After you see the final results, they should last as long as three years before you need a touchup!
