The Best Chemical Peel for Your Skin Type

A skincare professional applying a serum to a client's face using a brush, demonstrating a facial treatment in a clean, spa-like environment.

Whether you’re struggling with acne, dull skin texture, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, or sun damage, you’ve likely heard that a chemical peel can help you address your skin complaints.

There’s more than one type of chemical peel, making it easy for you to select a procedure that’s suitable for your skin type and specific concerns. At Glow Aesthetic Center in Encino, we offer four different chemical peels to ensure we’re able to address our clients’ needs.

Here’s what you need to know about finding the best chemical peel for your skin type.

Identify Your Top Concerns

Start by determining your top concerns for your skin; this will help you select the right type of chemical peel.

Do you have fine lines and wrinkles that you want to minimize the appearance of? Or, do you struggle with acne prone skin and enlarged pores? Perhaps you just want to smooth your skin texture and brighten your complexion?

Understanding your expectations will help us recommend the best procedures for your skin.

Know Your Options

Different chemical peels consist of certain steps and procedures to better address specific skincare needs.

The Illuminize Peel by Skinmedica

The Illuminize Peel by Skinmedica is ideal for improving the look of superficial skin woes or for obtaining the brightening benefits of a chemical peel without the downtime.

If you to improve your skin’s texture or revitalize your complexion, the Illumize Peel is an excellent alternative. There’s minimal peeling with an Illuminize Peel, though you may have a little flakiness. It’s perfect for exfoliating dull, lifeless skin.

To maximize your results, you’ll want to schedule a peel every couple of weeks.

The Vitalize Peel by Skinmedica

Consider the Vitalize Peel by Skinmedica if you’re dealing with fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, want to tighten your skin, or need to significantly brighten your skin tone.

The Vitalize Peel is a more intensive chemical peel suitable for moderate skin imperfections, like uneven skin texture and tone, deep lines, and scars.

You’ll need to schedule a peel every four weeks or so until you achieve your desired results. Effects from your peels are cumulative; most patients require three to six sessions for the best results.

The Perfect Derma Peel

The Perfect Derma Peel is a medium-strength treatment ideal for addressing noticeable signs of aging, including sunspots, fine lines, and wrinkles. It’s also a great alternative if you have acne prone skin.

Perfect Derma Peels contain retinol, a powerful ingredient for reducing acne and combating sun damage.

While you should anticipate peeling after the Perfect Derma Peel, the peeling usually lasts two to four days. You will notice results after a single peel, but for the most dramatic impact, plan on having two to three peels.

Perfect Derma Peels are usually scheduled every four weeks. Your results from your peel are permanent; you can keep your skin looking its best by following a suitable skincare routine.

Maintenance peels every three to six months after your initial session will help your skin continue to combat the signs of aging.

The Cosmelan Peel

If you suffer from melasma, scars, or hyperpigmentation, the Cosmelan Peel is a terrific fit for your skin’s needs. We apply your peel in-office, and you’ll leave it in place for six to twelve hours before removing it at home with our care kit.

The Cosmelan Peel works well for skin discoloration because there’s a second phase that involves regularly applying Cosmelan 2 cream. Cosmelan 2 cream encourages your body’s melanocytes to produce less melanin (the component that causes skin discoloration).

Your skin will typically peel for a few days after your appointment. While you’ll notice results within a few days, it can take a few months to obtain your final results.

What to Expect After a Chemical Peel

Regardless of the type of chemical peel you decide to get, you can expect your skin to be sensitive to UV radiation.

Remember, you’re removing old skin layers to reveal new, vibrant skin. Avoid intense sun exposure and make sunscreen part of your daily routine.

Your practitioner will tell what products you should and shouldn’t use while your skin is peeling, including guidelines for cosmetics.

It’s normal for your skin to burn and itch after your peel. You may also experience redness and irritation that feels similar to a sunburn.

Plan to take a few days off work until your skin is through peeling.

I had a consultation with Tia in the Encino office about fillers and Xeomin. She's awesome -- patient, takes time to explain the procedures in great detail and even drew out a plan. She wasn't pushing services and suggested doing the upper and lower face at different times to spread out the cost over time.

Trying botox for my 11s. They were very thorough for my initial evaluation and described a number of treatments in addition to neurotoxins which could be helpful, but absolutely did not pressure me into getting any of them. The process was quick and easy.

I’ve had fillers, laser treatment, and injectables done at Glow and have been very happy with my experience and results. The front desk staff is super nice and professional. My NP Elnaz is excellent about talking me through procedures. They make sure to provide you with the cost of everything clearly and scheduling and confirming has been very easy.
